About Sensus Naturae
It started the way most good things do — with a problem we couldn't find a solution for. And with a long line of amazing women who never let the herbs go quiet.
We're a mother and son operation based in Alberta. Herbs have always been part of our lives — passed down through the women in our family who kept that knowledge alive when the rest of the world wasn't paying attention. Then the resurgence happened. Suddenly there was more information, more research, more community than we knew what to do with. We got giddy. We're still pretty giddy.
We came to making our own products out of necessity. We needed a lotion for this, an oil for that. Something for the rashes, the dryness, the frizz — oh, the frizz. We started learning, started making, and somewhere in the process of going down the herbalist rabbit hole, we kept finding the same thing: it works. The plants work. They've always worked. We just had to figure out how to use them.
Fire cider was somewhere in the middle of all this — the moment we realized herbs could also be punchy and delicious and genuinely exciting to make. You don't have to make a gallon. Until you do. And when you get there, we'll help you find the herbs.
So we made one thing, then a few more. We grew what we could, sourced the rest as close to home as possible, and started making small batches of the things that actually solved the problem — teas, tinctures, infused oils, balms, and bars built around single herbs and traditional formulas that have been doing their job for centuries.
The mission now is sharing it. Because you shouldn't have to spend three years reading herbalism books to get the benefit of a good nettle hair oil or a cleavers skin oil or a comfrey balm. You shouldn't have to know the Latin name or understand the extraction method or source the ingredients yourself. We did that part. You just have to use it.
Everything we make is designed to fit into a real life. A few drops after a bath. A cup before bed. A balm in your bag. The best of what nature offers — even if you're not diving down the rabbit hole yourself.
Made at our kitchen table, for use at yours.
