Meet Your Nettle Hair Oil and Everything Bar Ritual
We were at the market this weekend, and goodness, did we sample a lot of hair oil! I think I applied it five times while showing it off, and my hair still didn’t look oily or feel heavy. You brought us so many thoughtful questions that we decided to gather the answers here. Consider this your practical guide to a hair oil that needn’t be a one-trick botanical pony, and the creamy, minty everything bar that shares its place in our shower.
A Quiet Confession, from One Woman to Another
I am a newly accepting curly girl. Probably. After years of calling my fine, somewhere-around-2B-or-2C hair “just wavy,” I am learning that perhaps it wasn’t unmanageable so much as unfamiliar. For almost twenty years, I flat-ironed it or wrestled it into submission with hot air. I wanted to get through the day without the frizz and fluff. I wanted to feel beautiful, attractive, and at home in myself.
Finding a product that gave me softness and slip without weighing those fine strands down was another story. I wanted my waves and curls to look more gathered, my flyaways a little quieter, and my hair to feel cared for rather than coated. There were many recipes, many experiments, and plenty of “well, that isn’t it.” This oil grew out of that trial and error. It became the blend I reached for because I liked how my hair felt when I used it.
And yes, I still use drugstore and commercial products. This is not a confession of botanical purity! My nettle oil is the ritual foundation alongside them: a little conditioning softness, a little slip, and a smoother-looking finish. I still reach for a styling product when I want hold. The oil has its own job, and it doesn’t need to do every job to earn its place.
There is a more tender part of this story, too. I am living with anemia, and shedding has been part of my experience. Caring for my health and getting appropriate medical guidance are a separate, essential part of this journey. The oil does not treat anemia or replace that care, and I can’t credit it with preventing hair loss or giving me waist-length hair. What I can say is that enjoying the hair I have became easier when I found a routine that felt good to me.
If you are facing thinning, shedding, or bare patches, please hear this: it is not a personal failure. It does not mean you have neglected yourself, and it does not make you less beautiful or less of a woman. You deserve support, answers where they can be found, and appropriate medical care. A bottle of oil should never ask you to carry the blame for something it cannot treat.
For me, care begins with looking after my health, not expecting a topical product to solve what needs medical attention. Alongside that, there is room for the quieter comforts: gently tending my hair, learning its texture, and taking a few minutes that belong to me. The oil helps with softness and polish; the ritual reminds me that I am worth caring for. Those are different things, and both matter.
My hair has long felt like part of my femininity, my own little crown. But I am learning that the woman beneath it deserves care regardless of how much hair she has, how it behaves, or what the mirror says on a difficult morning. I don’t have to earn tenderness by having a good hair day.
I sometimes go a week and a half to two weeks between shampoos. That is my routine, not a prescription or a measure of healthier hair. You don’t need to stretch wash days or “train” your scalp to care for yourself well. Choose a washing routine that suits your scalp, your hair, and your life.
What began as “I am ready to chop it all off” slowly became “perhaps I can find a kinder way to live with my hair.” Not a miracle. A self-care journey with many facets: health, patience, experimentation, and learning to work with what grows from my own head. Little by little, I am finding more ease. I am hopeful about what comes next, even if progress has its pauses.
That is why I want to share this oil so enthusiastically. It is my favourite result of years of experimenting, and one small, much-loved part of learning to care for myself. Not because your hair needs fixing to make you worthy, but because you already deserve the time and care.
A few drops for your ends, a slow scalp massage before wash day, a little help when flyaways have their own agenda: one bottle can find its way into more than one ritual.
Our Ultra Lightweight Nettle Hair Oil is handcrafted in Alberta with stinging nettle-infused MCT oil, grapeseed oil, sweet almond oil, sea buckthorn, and Fision Ecosil, an olive-derived silicone alternative that brings slip to the blend. Rosemary, frankincense, sage, and blue tansy lend their aromatic character.
The intention? Botanical hair care that feels light, not like you’ve accidentally dressed your head for a salad.
We formulated our oil to feel light, so you can enjoy the rosemary and blue tansy, the botanical softness, and that much-loved scent without a heavy finish. Remember: less is more. A few drops, a gentle hand, and, for the love of it all, take your time! Ritual makes room to notice the warmth, the herbs, and the pleasure of caring for yourself. You DO deserve that time and care.
We’ve talked about the herbs in a previous post; here, we’re bringing them together with a practical user manual for our hair oil and our Hair Therapy: Rosemary Mint Everything Bar. Keep this guide handy for wash day, curl refreshes, and those moments when a little botanical care is exactly what you crave.
1. The Slow Scalp Ritual
Sometimes the best part of hair care is taking five minutes that belong entirely to you. Our scalp-oiling ritual is inspired by Champi, the Indian tradition of head massage.
- Part dry hair to expose your scalp.
- Apply 1–2 droppers along the parts, using less if that suits your hair and scalp.
- Massage gently with your fingertips in circular motions for five minutes. No scratching, no vigorous scrubbing.
- Leave for 1–2 hours, then shampoo out.
This is a care ritual, not a promise of hair regrowth. If shedding is sudden, persistent, or concerning, seek advice from a qualified healthcare professional rather than relying on an oil.
2. A Pre-Wash Treatment for Lengths and Ends
Your scalp doesn’t have to have all the fun. Before washing, smooth a few drops through the mid-lengths and ends, concentrating on areas that feel dry or rough.
Leave it on during your pre-wash ritual, then shampoo. Start small: fine hair may need only a little, while thicker hair may suit a few more drops. The goal is a light coating, not a full oil slick. Unless you need and like the full slick... then go hard!
3. A Little Shine for Your Ends
For a finishing touch, rub one or two drops between your palms and lightly smooth over dry ends. Add more only if needed.
Think softness and shine, not saturation. Oil can make ends look more polished, but it doesn’t permanently repair split ends. Your stylist still gets that job. In the meantime, a little oil helps your ends look smoother and feel softer between visits, keeping that freshly cared-for feeling going a little longer.
4. A Softer Finish for Flyaways
When your hair has decided to develop its own weather system, try the smallest amount first.
Spread a drop between your palms, then gently skim over the surface of your hair. The formula’s slip makes it a useful finishing step for smoothing the appearance of frizz without starting with a heavy application.
5. A Light Touch on Damp Hair
After washing, try a drop or two through damp mid-lengths and ends before air-drying. Keep it away from your roots if they tend to get oily quickly, and adjust the amount to your texture.
This is a smoothing step, not a substitute for a dedicated heat protectant. If you’re using heated styling tools, use a product specifically intended for heat protection.
6. A Between-Wash Refresh
If your ends need a little attention between washes, use whatever remains on your hands after spreading a tiny drop of oil. Lightly smooth the ends and leave the roots alone.
Less is often more. You can add another drop, but you can’t un-pour the first handful.
Why Nettle?
Stinging nettle, Urtica dioica, is the botanical at the heart of this blend. It has a long place in traditional hair care, and we love bringing that plant relationship into a routine that feels easy enough to use, not just admire on the shelf.
In our formula, nettle is slowly infused into lightweight MCT oil. This is an infused botanical oil, not nettle essential oil and not a fresh nettle application. The carrier matters: we wanted a blend that could accompany a gentle scalp massage, soften the look of dry ends, or refresh curls without making every use feel like a full wash-day commitment.
Nettle also doesn’t work alone. Grapeseed and sweet almond oils bring conditioning softness, while olive-derived Fision Ecosil lends slip and a smoother finish. Rosemary, frankincense, sage, and blue tansy contribute the aromatic character people so often compliment. The finished feel belongs to the whole formula, rather than a miraculous claim for one plant.
Traditional use is meaningful to us, but it isn’t proof that this oil will regrow hair, stop shedding, or treat a scalp condition. What we offer is botanical care: softness, a more polished finish, and a reason to pause with your hands in your hair and the scent of herbs around you.
That is why nettle belongs here. Plant tradition, a wearable finish, and an everyday invitation to tend to yourself. No elaborate routine required, just a little oil and a little time you absolutely deserve.
A Few Sensible Ritual Rules
Patch test before your first use and stop if irritation develops. This formula contains sweet almond oil and essential oils, so review the ingredients if you have allergies or sensitivities. Avoid contact with eyes and use externally only.
Choose one use to begin with, rather than layering every ritual at once. Your hair will tell you whether it wants a drop, a few, or a wash-day treatment.
One bottle. A little botanical care. Plenty of ways to make it yours.
Your Hair Oil Questions, Answered
What is in the blend, and why?
Here is the ingredient rundown listed on our hair oil page:
- Stinging nettle (Urtica dioica): our central botanical, with a long history in traditional hair care. We slowly infuse it into MCT oil. That tradition is part of the story, not a guarantee of hair growth.
- MCT oil (Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride): the lightweight carrier that keeps the blend easy to spread without the feel of a heavy oil.
- Fision Ecosil: an olive-derived silicone alternative chosen for silky slip and a smooth finish.
- Grapeseed oil (Vitis vinifera): lightweight conditioning for the strands.
- Sweet almond oil (Prunus dulcis): softening care for hair that feels dry or rough.
- Sea buckthorn (Hippophae rhamnoides): a richly golden botanical oil in the blend.
- Vitamin E (Tocopherol): helps protect the oils from oxidation.
- Rosemary (Salvia rosmarinus): fresh, herbaceous, invigorating aromatic character.
- Frankincense (Boswellia sacra): resinous depth that lends the scent a grounding character.
- Sage (Salvia officinalis): an earthy herbal note.
- Blue tansy (Tanacetum annuum): its distinctive aromatic character rounds out the blend.
Why does everyone mention the smell?
The scent is something folks so often stop to compliment. Rosemary, frankincense, sage, and blue tansy make this more than a finishing step: it’s a little aromatic pause. For us, that is the soul of the ritual. Not a promise that a scent will treat anything, just the pleasure of warmth, plants, and a moment that belongs to you.
Can I use it daily to refresh curls?
That is one of our own favourite uses. Spread a drop or two between your palms, then gently smooth or scrunch through the lengths and ends of dry or lightly damp curls. Start with less for fine hair and add only what you need. This is a softening, smoothing refresh, not a replacement for your usual styling or hold product. You do not need to oil your scalp every day to enjoy it.
How do we do our weekly warm-oil ritual?
- Measure about a teaspoon of oil into a small heat-safe container. Use less if your hair needs less.
- Warm it gently in a warm-water bath, never in the microwave. Keep water out of the oil and test a drop before applying: comfortably warm, never hot.
- Work it through the lengths and ends. If your scalp tolerates the blend, include a gentle fingertip massage.
- Wrap your hair in a comfortably warm, damp towel, then layer a dry towel over it.
- Rest for 30 minutes, then shampoo and rinse thoroughly.
This is our shorter weekly ritual, an alternative to the 1–2-hour scalp-oiling routine above. You don’t need to do both. Warmth should feel pleasant, not intense.
Do I wash the oil out every time?
Wash out the scalp and warm-oil applications. A tiny amount used on ends, flyaways, or curls is a leave-in finishing step. If your hair looks oily or feels coated, use less next time. Start small rather than relying on extra washing to undo a generous pour.
Does it replace conditioner or repair damage?
Think of the oil as conditioning and finishing support. Keep using a conditioner if your hair needs one. It does not permanently repair split ends, replace heat protection, or treat a scalp condition.
The Rosemary Mint Everything Bar: Your Wash-Day Manual
Our Hair Therapy: Rosemary Mint Everything Bar earns its place in the shower by doing more than one thing well. It is made for hair, scalp, and body, with a rich, creamy lather and that fresh, cooling peppermint tingle. One thoughtfully handcrafted, small-batch bar, several everyday jobs.
What ingredients are listed for the bar?
- Saponified vegetable oils: the cleansing base that builds the rich lather. Our current product page describes these collectively rather than naming each individual vegetable oil.
- Hemp seed oil (Cannabis sativa): part of the bar’s nourishing oil blend.
- Tea tree essential oil (Melaleuca alternifolia): brings its crisp, clean aromatic character.
- Peppermint essential oil (Mentha × piperita): gives the blend its fresh scent and cooling, bracing sensation.
- Rosemary essential oil (Rosmarinus officinalis): adds an aromatic herbal note alongside the mint and tea tree.
How do I use it as shampoo?
- Wet your hair and scalp thoroughly.
- Wet the bar and build lather in your hands first.
- Work that lather gently through wet hair, from roots to tips, massaging with fingertips rather than scratching.
- Rinse thoroughly, taking time to rinse the scalp and the lengths.
- Follow with your usual conditioner if needed. Once hair is damp or dry, try a drop or two of hair oil on the ends for a finishing touch.
You don’t need to rub the bar directly back and forth through your hair. Start with the lather in your hands and add more as needed.
How do I use it on my body?
This is where that heavenly creamy lather gets to show off. We love the bar on an ayote cloth for a once-a-week exfoliating ritual, and on a shower pouf for a big, generous lather when using it as an everyday body wash.
How do I use it with an ayote cloth for weekly exfoliation?
Wet the cloth and bar, work a little soap into the cloth, and gently wash wet body skin with light pressure. Let the cloth do the work: no hard scrubbing required. Rinse thoroughly. Once a week is our preferred ritual, but skip exfoliation if your skin feels sensitive, irritated, or broken. Rinse the cloth well and let it dry fully between uses.
How do I get that huge lather on a shower pouf?
Wet the pouf and bar, rub the bar over the pouf, then gently squeeze and work the pouf to build a big, creamy lather. Wash your body and rinse thoroughly. This is our favourite option for everyday body washing if your skin tolerates daily use, rather than using the exfoliating cloth every day. Rinse the pouf well, hang it to dry, and keep it clean. If your skin starts feeling dry or irritated, reduce frequency or stop.
Does “everything” really mean everywhere?
Here, “everything” means its listed uses: hair, scalp, and body. It is not an invitation to use peppermint on eyes, intimate areas, mucous membranes, or broken or irritated skin. Keep both products out of your eyes. A cooling sensation should not feel painful; rinse off and stop using the product if you feel burning or irritation. Patch test first, especially if your skin is sensitive.
Will one bar carry me through to spring?
A well-cared-for bar can be a long-lasting shower companion, but we would not promise the same lifespan for every household. How often you wash, hair length, whether you use it for both hair and body, and how you store it all make a difference. Let it dry fully on a draining soap dish between uses, away from the shower stream and standing water. Give that lovely lather a chance to last.
Can I use the bar to wash out my hair oil?
Yes, pair your pre-wash oil ritual with the bar’s shampoo routine: wet thoroughly, lather in your hands, work gently through the hair, and rinse well. Use a modest amount of oil to begin with. If hair still feels coated after washing, adjust your oil quantity and washing routine rather than scrubbing harder.
What if my hair or scalp doesn’t like the routine?
There is no prize for pushing through discomfort. Stop if either product irritates your skin. If your hair feels rough or coated, reassess the amount of oil and whether this bar suits your hair and water. Persistent scalp symptoms or unexpected shedding deserve advice from a qualified healthcare professional, not a stronger peppermint tingle.
A Frothy Experiment, Still Growing
There is another idea putting down roots in the garden: a nettle-and-soapwort shampoo. For now, it is a hopeful, frothy experiment, not a finished product or a recipe ready to share.
We planted our soapwort only last year, and we are still waiting for her to spread her roots, her wings, and her seeds. As she flourishes, we’ll explore what she might bring to a washing ritual alongside nettle. Plants have their own timetable; we are learning to leave room for it.
One possibility is a powdered format, with a little of the preparation left to you. But there is formulation work to do before we can promise that approach. A liquid version would need its preservation worked out, and a powder would still need appropriate safety and stability checks. We won’t assume that dried herbs make a finished shampoo preservative-free, or that adding water at home settles the question.
More on that as the soapwort grows. Our hope is that this curious little experiment will fit the heart of what we do: make herbs easily accessible, useful, and warmly adored in everyday life. A little participation, a little wonder, and perhaps a little froth. First, we let her grow.
The Simple Two-Product Routine
On wash day: choose a scalp, lengths-and-ends, or warm-oil ritual if desired; shampoo with the bar and rinse thoroughly; condition if needed; finish with a tiny amount of oil on the ends.
Between washes: use a drop for curls, dry ends, or flyaways only when they need it. For body care, enjoy the bar on a shower pouf for your everyday lather, and use an ayote cloth for a gentle weekly exfoliation if it suits your skin. Let the bar and your cloth or pouf dry between uses.
Always: review ingredients for allergies and sensitivities. The oil contains sweet almond oil, and both products contain essential oils. Use externally only and stop if irritation develops. These are everyday care products, not treatments for disease or health conditions.
A heavenly creamy lather. A fresh peppermint lift. A few drops of botanical softness. You don’t need every ritual every day, just the ones that make your hair feel cared for and your routine feel like yours.
