Autumnal slow down

The garden is quieting. The goldenrod has gone to silver, the nettles are beginning to yellow at their tips, and the light arrives now at a lower, softer angle. In the herbalist's calendar, autumn is not a winding down — it is a gathering in.

At Sensus Naturae, this season is one of our favourites to work with. The rhythms shift, and so do the plants we reach for. Here, we share a few of the seasonal rituals that anchor our studio work through September and October — and that you can bring into your own home.

The Ritual of the Weekly Hair Oil

If there is one practice we return to every autumn without fail, it is the slow, intentional hair oil ritual. As the air dries and indoor heat begins, the scalp and strands respond to a bit of extra care. We reach for our Ultra Lightweight Nettle Hair Oil — a small-batch blend built around Urtica dioica (nettle leaf), an herb with deep roots in traditional European and North American botanical practice.

Nettle has been gathered and used for centuries across many cultures — as food, as fibre, and as a plant ally woven into seasonal care traditions. In our studio blend, it is infused slowly into a base of lightweight carrier oils chosen for their easy absorption and their long history of use in hair and scalp care.

A simple autumn oil ritual:

  1. Warm a small amount of oil between your palms before applying.
  2. Work from root to mid-length, taking a moment to massage the scalp in slow, circular movements.
  3. Leave on for 20–30 minutes, or overnight wrapped in a warm cloth.
  4. Rinse with a gentle shampoo.

Once a week is enough to notice a difference in how your hair feels through the drier months. This is a ritual, not a treatment — a small, repeatable act of seasonal attention.

The Evening Tea Pause — Now in Tea Bag Form

Autumn asks us to slow down — and a cup of herbal tea is one of the simplest ways to answer that invitation. In traditional plant-based practice across many cultures, autumn was the season to gather warming botanicals: roots deepening their reserves, bark tightening against the cold, seeds drying in their pods.

We're excited to share something new from our studio: Lanny is now hand-making tea bags from our full range of herbal tea blends. Every tea we offer — the same small-batch, carefully sourced blends you already know — is now available in a convenient bag format, still made right here in Calgary. For those who love the ritual without the loose-leaf prep, or who want to tuck a few bags into a travel kit or gift, this is the option we've been working toward.

Our herbal tea blends are crafted using dried botanicals chosen for their flavour, their tradition of use, and their ability to make a genuinely good cup of tea. We think about aroma as much as anything — a tea that smells like the season is already half the ritual.

A few ways we brew through autumn:

  • The longer steep: Try steeping your tea covered for 10–15 minutes rather than the standard 3–5. Covering the cup traps the aromatic volatile oils and produces a fuller, more layered cup.
  • The decoction approach: For any blends that include roots or bark, try a gentle simmer in a small pot for 15–20 minutes rather than a steep. Traditional herbalists have used this method for centuries with denser plant materials.
  • The evening wind-down: Reserve your most aromatic, floral-leaning blends for the hour before bed. Scent is deeply connected to the nervous system's sense of safety and ease.

A Seasonal Partnership: Sensus Naturae × Jams in Airdrie

This autumn, we're thrilled to announce a collaboration with our friends at Jams in Airdrie — a local maker bringing the very best of Alberta's seasonal harvests into beautifully crafted small-batch jams and preserves.

The pairing felt natural from the start. Both studios are rooted in the same philosophy: gather what the season offers, work with it slowly and thoughtfully, and put something genuinely good into the hands of your community. Their preserves alongside our teas and oils is a combination that makes a lot of sense at the table — and, we think, makes for a memorable gift.

Stay tuned for more on what we're building together, including seasonal gift bundles and joint market appearances across the Calgary and Airdrie area. If you want to be the first to hear about it, make sure you're on our list.

What We're Gathering In

Beyond the products themselves, autumn rituals at Sensus Naturae are about a particular quality of attention. We slow down the pace of production. We spend more time in the kitchen, working with dried plants from the summer harvest. We make notes — in the literal hedgerow-field-notes sense — on what grew well, what we want to work with next year, what the garden taught us.

This newsletter and blog are part of that practice. If you're building your own seasonal rituals, we'd love to hear about them. Come find us at a Calgary market this fall, or drop us a note.

With plant-stained fingers and warm mugs,
Sara & Lanny
